SW 4004 Square Bale Wrapper
SW 4004 Square Bale Wrapper Offers Flexibility, Reliability
By Sara Schoenborn
The Kuhn SW 4004 square bale wrapper has proven to be a durable piece of equipment for John Takacs. The machine’s diversity allows him to wrap 2x3, 3x3 and 3x4 large square bales as well as 4- and 5-foot round bales.
For John Takacs, like many other hay and straw producers across the country, time is everything. Takacs is the manager of Mar And Meadow, his family’s hay and straw operation in Wellington, Ohio.
Takacs says that when he purchases equipment, he looks for what can get the job done – and in the timeliest manner. Mar And Meadow (named after Takacs’ parents, Marlene and Andy) harvests around 100 acres of hay and between 1,100 and 1,200 acres of straw each year.
When Takacs, who works with just two part-time employees, isn’t working on the farm, he can be found doing custom baling for others in the area. He says he wraps 2x3, 3x3 and 3x4 large square bales as well as 4- and 5-foot round bales. This variety of bale sizes that he deals with day-to-day is what led him to purchase his first piece of Kuhn equipment: the Kuhn SW 4004 square bale wrapper.
“I picked that particular wrapper because we were switching balers at the time”, Takacs says. “I went from a 2x3 bale size to a 3x4 bale, so I wanted something that would give me the flexibility to change bale sizes.”
The other reason, he adds, is that through his custom work there are a variety of balers – both round and square – in the neighboring area.
“I wanted to be equipped with something that would give me the flexibility to wrap anybody’s bale,” he explains, noting that his custom business has been growing over the years.
Takacs says although he purchased the Kuhn SW 4004 primarily for his own use with large square bales, it seems now like he’s doing just as many round bales as square bales – and he’s not complaining.
“The wrapper is a real nice machine,” he notes. “We use it for all cuttings of hay. I have a few people that wrap everything from first to fifth crop so we use it all throughout the growing season.”
Purchased last year, the Kuhn SW 4004 has proven to be a durable piece of equipment for Takacs. He says any initial hiccups he had with it were all covered under warranty.
“It’s been very reliable,” he says. “It’s a flexible machine – easy to change the bale sizes. It’s one of the quickest wrappers on the market. It’s been a good, solid machine for us.”
Takacs says his favorite thing about the Kuhn SW 4004 wrapper is the ability to wrap bales right in the field. Without having to pick up the bales and move them to a location first, it allows him to get the bales wrapped sooner.
You can also wrap bales stationary at one location with this model, or wrap right out in the field, as Takacs does.
“I go out and wrap right after baling. That gives me some flexibility – saves me some labor too because I have a little more time to get the bales moved and picked up,” he explains, adding that he runs the wrapper with a Case Puma and an ISOBUS controller.
He says this is important for him because with the size of his operation, he doesn’t always have extra help.
“It’s time-critical to get the hay wrapped in a certain amount of hours so that was the priority I put towards my purchasing decision,” he says.
Takacs says that no matter what size the operation “from large to small, if it’s in your price range I think it would work for you. Actually, I know it would work for you. I would definitely recommend it.”
He did his homework before making this purchase, noting that he was looking for a particular machine.
“I would check on YouTube – they have videos of every piece of equipment there is on YouTube and I saw some of these that they were running in Europe,” he says, adding that when he went to a show and saw the machine in person, he knew the Kuhn SW 4004 was the one he was going to purchase.
Takacs has worked with Tony Polen of Polen Implement in Elyria, Ohio for years, purchasing his first tractor from the dealer in 1984. “I’m very satisfied with their help,” he says. “If I had any questions or anything they were very good to me. They would answer any time – even after hours.”
He adds that if Polen didn’t know the answer, he’d find it – referring Takacs to Kuhn directly and getting him the information within just a few hours. That “very quick, very good service” has helped Takacs make another purchasing decision – he plans to buy a round bale wrapper in the future, as his business continues to grow.
“The company is a very good company. The people that support it have been very good, very helpful to me,” he says, adding, “I just appreciate their respect and courteousness in their sales and support of their products.”
It’s evident that Takacs would recommend the Kuhn SW 4004 to fellow producers.
“I would recommend the product. If anyone was looking at buying the product I would give them a referral and take the time to share my experience with anyone else if they ask.”
